Vashirdfel Simply A Masterpiece
Lucybespro It is a performances centric movie
Neive Bellamy Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
Loui Blair It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
DrChristers Very disappointing. The script suffers from extreme tell-a-life-story-in-two-scenes-itus leaving any tension or drama on the cutting room floor. Slater and Leto, who can normally make the best of bad writing, appear wooden and passionless. And Claire Forlani, who requires the intense drama of CSI to evoke any feeling, is preposterous as the love interest. One cannot believe she would tempt Leto to risk tuppence let alone his entire fortune, family and lifestyle. Not even the mighty weight of Derek Jacobi can make his character convincing. There is no mystery and no intrigue, which leaves the viewer with no care for what happens next. Dreary mood lighting supposedly meant to make the film dark, merely lends credence to the assumption that a minimal budget meant they couldn't afford professional lighting. With so many other excellent period dramas available, it is little wonder this movie ended up in the bargain bin.
jodypat Yuck. I caught this on the Women's Entertainment channel last night and the hosts promised it would give the viewer insight into how men think. Didn't work. I know it was a melodrama, but between some of the casting and the simplistic story line, I couldn't even enjoy it for that. Jason Leto delivered a very callow Basil who did not age credibly, and Christian Slater's English accent came and went. Derek Jacobi did his very best to raise the level of quality acting, but by far Claire Forlani did the best job of putting life into her role. (SPOILER) What really hacked me off was the simplistic approach to women: the blonde women were sacrificing and obedient; the dark one were untrustworthy and sluts. I really tried to like this - and wasn't looking for much - but I really couldn't get into it.And the Cinematherapy hosts don't help. They twice misnamed one of the characters. It would be a better show if you actually believed the hosts had seen the film!
Mysie Basil hooks up with the grungy Christian Slater, who helps hook him up with the object of his lust, played by Claire Forlani. And it all goes downhill from there. Seems like it might've been an ok Victoria melodrama to read, but on film, it's just boring.
IrisNo11 I was disappointed in this film. I was hoping for something interesting or remarkable to happen later on, but it really didn't happen. Yet I do give credit for Jared Letto. He did a great job in this film, but the film itself is so boring!
