FeistyUpper If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
Erica Derrick By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Staci Frederick Blistering performances.
Reno Rangan It was a decent romantic-comedy with a good cast. But is an old people romance theme and if you like this director's films, then you would enjoy it as well. A simple tale, and some of the contents looks unreal because of intense story development. An elderly man who is in the real estate business tries to sell his house after his wife's death. Now lives in a small apartment surrounded by the annoying neighbours, but one day his drug addict son brings his daughter to leave with him since he's going to prison. Without an alternate he accepts it and in the meantime, the film narrates their bond as well as his romance with a next door woman. This film was rated so badly, but I quite enjoyed it. I know it is not an awesome film, yet I felt it a bit touching and at a time funny. Michael Douglas was very good and so the Diane Keaton with the supporting actors' fine contributions. It was at its best, there was nothing to improve, because if it does the fun part would vanish. So it is as what it is, only we have to jump in and have some good time knowing the film's limit. Maybe the family audience finds it quite comfortable. Looking at the theme and the narration that's how it should be. So a big yes for them, but it has some sexual references and I'm just reminding that if you want to watch it with your children.6.5/10
kosmasp The story itself is pretty simple. The characters are kind of simple too (at least the one played by Michael Douglas). But the way they play (off each other), is phenomenal. There is something to the actors, which we know they are able to charm us and that they have the ability to take things to another level. And that is what they are doing here, elevating the movie itself. There have been a couple of movies, where the main character is unlikeable at first. And this "method" makes sense, but only if a really strong actor is playing that role. Some things might go a bit too smooth, but overall you know where this is going. It's a nice movie, with overall good acting and superb acting by our two leads.
Franklie Possible spoilers: The Mark Andrus movies 'As Good As It Gets' and 'Life As A House' are two of my favorites. The characters are deep and the changes they go through are believable. This movie didn't have those qualities. It did have moments of clever dialogue and had actors that we love and beautiful scenery, but overall it was cheesy and full of clichés. Maybe it was director Reiner not being at his finest.Oren Little was so manipulative, even at the end, that he had no sex appeal and it's unbelievable anyone would want to be with him. Leah was much smarter than her actions so we couldn't really relate to her either. Their relationship was cringe-worthy. Making kids (or anyone) pay you with a kiss is creepy. Saving a stuffed animal that's been "used" by a dog is "ew".ALL references to willies or poop could have been done without. They're cheap references, and we miss the highroad clever dialogue that would have been there instead. And we can ALWAYS do without birth scenes. The only character that we believed in was Mrs. Reyes. Everyone else seemed like a caricature. And why did no one ask Oren how his wife would have treated his child or grandchild? It probably would have ruined the shallow story line.Hopefully the next stories we get from Andrus will be more soul-searching like his earlier movies, but hopefully they won't be rated R so that I can share them with more people.
tavm Just watched this with my mom on a Netflix disc. We both enjoyed this mostly leisurely humorous look at a couple of older leads-Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton-coping with the loss of their spouses while also dealing with one selling his former home as a realtor (Douglas), one trying to not get too depressed while performing songs on stage (Keaton), and both dealing with a young girl-Douglas' son's offspring whose father is about to go to jail for a crime he didn't commit-staying in the grassy retreat neighborhood they live next door in. I'll just now say this was quite humorous and touching if not hilarious or too dramatic. Director Rob Reiner gives a nice measured pace throughout and appears himself as Keaton's pianist accompanist with an obvious bad hair job! I also liked Frances Sternhagen as Michael's fellow real estate work mate, and that girl played by Sterling Jerins. So on that note, And So It Goes is worth a look.
