Cristal The movie really just wants to entertain people.
bettycjung 1/19/18. It was nice to finally watch this movie in DVD that came along with a couple of short docs made in 2017 that added background material. It is a true cult classic. Similar to other teen movies depicting the teenage angst, this one was great for capturing the Bronx of the '60s. The footage of the Bronx's Fordham Road, and Alexander's brought back great memories of a time when it was great to live in that borough! Good casting made this movie worth catching. Wahl and Allen were phenomenal! And, so was the Bronx!
Tony Liked the film to a certain point, but really wish Hollywood would change the generic narrative. Italian & Black gangs are basically decent guys, Chinese gangs are fearsome for using Kung FU. Whilst all White gangs are vicious ignorant brutes, get real. All gangs are Clanish, which is worse than racist, our Scottish gangs have been fighting each other for centuries. If you ignore the obvious stereotyping of White gangs you can enjoy this film if only for the soundtrack itself.
nearhood1 I first saw this movie at a drive in theater when I was in college back in the late 1970's.I liked it but didn't think much about it for a long time. Recently I caught it again and realized what a thoroughly good movie it was.Never mind the setting or time period. If you ever felt any teen-age angst, or if you ever felt a part of anything bigger than you, this is a movie that you can relate to.The soundtrack is good if you like early 1960's music. But to me this was incidental.Powerful performances propel this movie, although the ending is a bit strange. All of the acting is A-1 in my book.
Wrapper30 I love this film. I remember this was one of the first videos I hired in the early 80's and loved it initially as a teenager for the fighting, humour and great soundtrack. I revisit it a couple of times a year and it grows on more even more and you realise there is a lot more to it. Turkey's death is more and more harrowing and most of the guys fight and play (american) football to escape from poverty and abusive parents. I am quite surprised that other than Karen Allen and Ken Wahl, none of the leads really went on to bigger and better things as there are some fine performances in this. I much prefer it to the better known "The Warriors".
