Synopsis

Meerkat Manor is a British television programme produced by Oxford Scientific Films for Animal Planet International that premiered in September 2005 and ran for four series until its cancellation in August 2008. Blending more traditional animal documentary style footage with dramatic narration, the series told the story of the Whiskers, one of more than a dozen families of meerkats in the Kalahari Desert being studied as part of the Kalahari Meerkat Project, a long-term field study into the ecological causes and evolutionary consequences of the cooperative nature of meerkats. The original programme was narrated by Bill Nighy, with the narration redubbed by Mike Goldman for the Australian airings and Sean Astin for the American broadcasts. The fourth series, subtitled The Next Generation, saw Stockard Channing replacing Astin as the narrator in the American dubbing. Meerkat Manor premiered in the United Kingdom on 12 September 2005, and the first 13-episode series concluded on 24 October 2005. With the success of the programme in the United Kingdom, Animal Planet started broadcasting it on its national channels in Australia, Canada, and the US. It has since been rebroadcast in more than 160 other countries. The fourth, and final, series aired initially in the United States from 6 June 2008 to 22 August 2008; it aired in the United Kingdom in April 2009. In August 2009, it was reported that the programme had been cancelled.

Lucia Ayala It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
marianwcarter I saw the preview about Merkat Manor and that was it! I always thought they were such delightful little critters even before that show was on Animal Planet. After the first show, I was hooked. The worst of my viewing was the night Flower died. Somehow, I was always in her corner every time she pulled her clan out of bad situations. I just wonder what happened to Zaphod, Daisy, Mozart, Wilson, Tosca, Youssarian and the rest of the Whiskers. It was kind of like being a cheering squad for a team for my family and me. I even got my sister and some co-workers hooked because I talked about them so much. My five and half-year old grandson nick-named me "Tosca." (Smile). I became rather partial toward the Whiskers. To Cambridge University, Sean Astin and the others, will there ever be another season for the Meerkats? If there will be, you will make me the happiest person in Charleston, South Carolina. That was an excellent series.
Ccats I cannot remember any of my TV life since I met the Whiskers family.... No other program can compare. Their reality, their life, and, sadly the tragic event of the pups' deaths mirrors life without the need for extreme makeovers or trading places. Watching these little critters interact with each other and their environment allows you to watch how you wished we could all live and love. Want a lesson in parenting? Take a look at the Whiskers and their babysitters. I only hope for the best for courageous little Shakespeare. Unfortunately the "Clue" to Shakespeare's fate was not in the first two episodes of the new season. But Flower, Zaphod, Mitch and the rest of the Naughty kits, the Lazuli and a new group called the Commandoes will keep me tuning in to the Animal Planet every Friday eve.
cabq-member OK, so the hardest part of watching this is to not assign human emotions to this little wild critters and to get over our human desire to save every creature. After all, they live in the wild and they have their own ways and we need to just let them be and enjoy them. The meerkats are adorable...the funniest little faces and bodies and they way they stand on their hind feet and look around is just a scream, but of course it has purpose. The closeups give me the shivers because I can see the fleas flitting around their little bodies and there for a while one of them had ticks, which are normally group groomed off.Listen, take the time to watch this. Anyone would enjoy it, or they don't have a heart. The meerkats are adorable and lovable, except for the fleas.
MichaelC91 The thing that struck me most about this program is that meerkats are more interesting than any Big Brother series. It has a distinct Big Brother style situation with cameras situated around a family of meerkats and it follows their everyday movements. The group is dominated by 'Flower'. The voice-over is totally hilarious as well for example; "Flower has been the only female in the family allowed to have babies, a) because she loves being the centre of attention, and b) because she's a psychopath" The program is what show like Big Brother and Celebrity Love Island want to be. The show is just a great piece of television, whether its the members of the family sneaking of to a different clan to have a quick nookie or to the young-ones fighting off elders for bits of scorpion!.
