Synopsis

When Nick Garrett was 18, he packed up his truck and said goodbye for a summer road trip that turned into 10 years of being away. He has since become a literary celebrity in New York, living off the fame and fortune of his best-selling novel and movie, based on his hometown friends. To the literary world, Nick defined a generation, but to his hometown, he betrayed them by sharing secrets. Now, without inspiration for a new book, Nick returns to his hometown to find that feelings toward him have changed.

Reviews

GamerTab That was an excellent one.
SnoReptilePlenty Memorable, crazy movie
Griff Lees Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
Lachlan Coulson This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.
mdfluvsjesus Just started watching 2 season series last night, on Hulu, and I'm almost done. Why was this show ever canceled? That was a huge mistake!
Jack Smedsson I gave October Road a two because, even though it is really really awful, it taught me something. If you came across this show, like I did, by way of the excellent 1996 film Beautiful Girls, written by Rosenberg, then you will suddenly realise what a difference good acting, casting and direction make! I thought Beautiful Girls was a very well put together film and had a great cast that gelled together really well (apparently Ted Demme, the director, made the entire cast live together for three weeks so they could bond and convey a sense of lifelong buddies). So I liked Beautiful Girls and figured that was down to Scott Rosenberg's writing. No such luck. Even though the script is basically by the same guy, following a very similar premise, and written since he's had the experience of writing for a Hollywood production, October Road sucks. It is so bad I don't know where to begin criticising it.I would say the camera work is bad, for example, but it wouldn't be fair on the cameramen as they probably went blind from watching such bad acting! Bryan Greenberg is, as the lead, the worst offender. You've got to wonder whether he slept with the casting director to get the part or if maybe the casting director was off learning how to be bad at his/her job the day god was handing out brains. Clearly, though, Greenberg was cast for his male-eye-candy skills rather than his ability to deliver lines or show any emotion beyond, "do I look good in this shot?" The direction is also palpably bad. Beautiful Girls is, in hindsight, also full of Rosenberg's idiotic verbose dialogue but the actors were made to deliver it so well that it fits the mood of the movie. In October Road its as though the director said, "Great, you delivered that randomly verbose line (which is so out of keeping with the fact that your character is a small town construction worker) without showing even the slightest sign of human emotion or natural intonation."Even though October Road is basically unwatchable, I recommend you watch it to compare it to Beautiful Girls. The comparison should be a textbook example of what a difference good acting and direction can make to an unexceptional (or, in the case of October Road, completely inept) script.
PandoraX I came across the show due to utter boredom because i was pretty much running out of shows to watch since i have watched quite a bunch... i decided to get the the DVD for this one and i was definitely surprised... the show is great and i don't understand why it didn't gain any more popularity than it has... the thing i loved most about the show was that most of the things aren't as expected as they are in most other shows... the surprises in the show were ACTUALLY surprising... the story flows nicely... the dialogs and the characters are wonderful....there was no stuff happening on the big scale, everything is pretty ordinary and believable and no clichés... and the show is original...and one of the few shows that i look forward to watching (another being brothers and sisters). In contrast to serials like one tree hill and others which get too dramatic and too much keeps happening, this was a pleasant change and most definitely a good watch...
keepontrying Well finally! When I started to watch this show I just could not get it. I tried and tried but I simply could not watch an entire episode. I was not enjoying it for several reasons. Mainly I just did not find it believable. The plot seemed ridicules to me. The acting did not grab me. I knew the show had potential, but I just gave up. Then this season I gave it another shot. Bingo! The plots have improved, The believability factor is now in place. The acting has come up to par. The show has now become interesting to me. Laura Prepon's acting is now in sync with her character and has improved tremendously. She finally looks just as good (better) as when she was a teenager and before she died her hair blond. I think they finally got her make up right. I am glad this show came around. There is just so little good stuff on TV this season. Kudos to the actors, writers and producers for pulling this show from ho-hum to oh-yea. Keep up the good work.
