Synopsis

In 1935, financially strapped widow Louisa Durrell, whose life has fallen apart, decides to move from England, with her four children (three sons, one daughter), to the island of Corfu, Greece. Once there, the family moves into a dilapidated old house that has no electricity and that is crumbling apart. But life on Corfu is cheap, it's an earthly paradise, and the Durrells proceed to forge their new existence, with all its challenges, adventures, and forming relationships.

WasAnnon Slow pace in the most part of the movie.
VeteranLight I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
Matylda Swan It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties.
Josephina Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
diana-lyons If you haven't read Gerald Durrell's Corfu Trilogy, or just part of it, then you will probably think this is an entertaining series set in the 1930s. But I have read the books and loved them, and what really stands out for me is the way this adaptation has completely missed the delightful and wicked humour shown in Durrell's books. There are some mildly funny parts, but mostly it's a lot of hand-wringing from Keely Hawes as Louisa, who hardly gets a mention in the books, a lot of sulking and bad behaviour from the three older children and not much about Gerry, who should be the focus of the whole thing. I don't mind writers taking liberties with adaptations of books if it's clear they have read those works and have tried to capture the esence of them for the screen, but this one really misses the mark.
tim-Chinchen The Durrel's gets better and better (and it started pretty good!) it's perfect Sunday night "8pm" watching - (writing as someone who like GoT/Breaking bad/etc/etc!), it's nice to have something that makes you laugh and chuckle! The third series still has it and I think even better than the first 2! :-)
BERGDORF I usually look forward to my Sunday nights watching Masterpiece, but the "Durrells" is the worst show they have ever aired. There is no purpose for the story line. The cast is boring. The mother has no simpatico with the "children". And that nasty little boy always has a dirty face. Please pull it out of rotation.
Laight The show seems to attract two different viewing audiences: those who know little or nothing about the books upon which it is based, and those who adore the books. The former like the show. The latter do not. I belong to the latter group. I grew up with these and all of the other Durrell animal books. They are among the most entertaining of their kind ever written. This series has almost nothing to do with them. It's a kind of weird family drama that acknowledges some of what makes the books so special, but then veers off into your basic family-struggles-in-strange-land-to-survive formulaic pap. It's hard to know what the producers were thinking. The cast handles the poor scripts pretty well, and the direction is good. The scenery is lovely. That's not enough to make a good show. And what's really missing is what made the books so wonderful: Gerry's absolute love of animals. Every episode contains some kind of Gerry and the animals bit, but the screenwriter has no conception of what these creatures really meant to Gerry. Here the character has only a scientific interest in them, he's cold and almost brutal toward them. What made Gerry Durrell so remarkable was that he considered every animal to be as deserving of respect as any human. He didn't just trap them and study them. He fell in love with them. That love, that warmth, that emotion is totally missing.
