Wordiezett So much average
BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Calum Hutton It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
Billy Ollie Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
hrkepler 63 minutes have hardly ever felt so long. The original title of the film was simply 'Shark Reef' but 'She Gods' were added by insistence by AIP. Roger Corman himself said, that he has no idea what or who is 'She God', so the title is misleading. 'She Gods of Shark Reef' was filmed back to back with 'Naked Paradise' in Hawaii mostly because Roger Corman wanted to get maximum use out of the locations. Two brothers (Bill Cord and Don Durant), whom one is wanted for manslaughter and smuggling, are washed ashore after shipwreck on the island inhabited only by women. Two beefcakes and many gorgeous women in short skirts. The men are not welcomed on the island and one of the girls (Lisa Montell) is blamed for saving the men thus bringing down the wrath of god (as we learn, that is not the titular 'She God'). The brothers need to escape from the island, one wants to save the girl, other wants to steal the pearls. The lacking of dialogue, proper plot or coherent story in all levels reveals how rushed that particular production was. Corman has said, that this was his most enjoyable experience making movies, but I guess he never thought that it might not be so enjoyable to audiences. 'She Gods of Shark Reef' is one Corman film that anyone could (or even should) pass. At least herewriter can't recommend that particular piece of exploitation.
Rainey Dawn We have two buff guys who are brothers: one is a murderer and the other an okay dude. They go to sea after the one brother murders a man, a storm comes up and leaves them stranded on an island. This island is full of only women - and only one or two of them are cute to look at. The women dive for pearls for a company that comes to them once in awhile to pick up the pearls. It'll be a few days before that boat arrives to the island and the men have plenty of time to show off their muscles to the girls. The "good" brother falls in-love with one of the woman. These two men, along with the women, must watch out for the shark island god's anger! Basically just two guys showing off their muscles. Not a great film, in-fact it's terrible. What was Roger Corman thinking? Maybe he just needed to fill a quota so he quickly cranked this one out.2/10
Uriah43 After murdering a guard at an outpost somewhere in the Pacific, a man by the name of "Lee Johnston" (Don Durant) and his innocent brother, "Chris Johnston" (Bill Cord) make the decision to escape by boat to another location where they can hide out. Along the way, a hurricane hits and their boat sinks. As luck would have it they are rescued by some female pearl divers and brought ashore to a nearby island. While there they are treated hospitably and told that a police boat will come by to pick them up in about 10 days. Needless to say, they don't like the sound of that and make plans to leave before it arrives. At any rate, for a low-budget production the director (Roger Corman) did a pretty good job of taking advantage of the scant resources at his disposal. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to pull this movie into average territory. For example, the tropical scenery was beautiful but the black and white film failed to do it justice. Likewise, some of the scenes involving the sharks looked like they came from a National Geographic film which were simply reused for special effects. In any case, the movie ended up being somewhat sluggish and for that reason I rate it as below average.
Chase_Witherspoon When Durant kills a guard during a failed arms theft, he convinces his friend (Cord) to sail to a remote island where friends will shelter him to avoid capture by authorities. Alas, the boat on which they sail capsizes in a storm and the two survivors are saved by the inhabitants of an island of women, governed by maternal den mother Gerson. The women work for an unidentified corporation, harvesting pearls, hula dancing and fishing. Sounds idyllic, except that Gerson has summoned the police to recover the fugitives, spurring them to engineer an escape - along with local girl Montell with whom Cord has become romantically involved. It's cheap, uninspired Roger Corman nonsense; picturesque with amiable performances by Montell, Cord and Durant in particular, but little excitement or suspense. The shark reef itself doesn't appear especially threatening, the largest specimen six feet at best and looking more like a lemon shark than a fearsome tiger. Durant and Cord have obviously spent time preparing for their roles in the gymnasium, while Montell has ensured no evident tan lines blur the imagination. Gerson is a matron-like mother superior, disapproving of the boys and their ambitions for her young, impressionable charges. The climax surpassed the meagre expectations, and generally the narrative is pretty coherent albeit very compact. If you worship the Corman factory, then "She Gods" will take pride of place on your shelf. If however you're only a casual viewer, even at barely a tick over the hour mark, this might be a bit too fast and loose to keep you entertained.
